Steering Stabilizer
$485

CONTACT: www.precision-rp.com

THE GOODS: A steering stabilizer is useful when track conditions get really rough, or if you smack something hard on the trail (like a rock, root, or stump); it helps reduce the impact felt through your handlebars.

The new Precision Racing Products steering stabilizer is used by a lot of top pro riders, and they have given it tons of praise (as a matter of fact, halfway through the 2005 race season, seven out of the top nine pros switched over to the PRP unit). The high-quality, compact stabilizer is made from hard-anodized aluminum and stainless steel components. According to PRP, without any seals in the pressure area its damper can absorb thousands of pounds of pressure, thousands of times, without failing. It's extremely adjustable, too-you can independently tune the amount of damping between the center and the side-to-side throw.

So is it hype, or have all these racers stumbled onto a secret weapon? It's interesting to note that not one of the pros using this system has been paid to run or promote the product (and we're talking top racers like Tim Farr, Doug Gust, John Natalie, Jeremiah Jones, Joe Byrd, Bill Ballance, Keith Little, Travis Spader, and others).

THE VERDICT: It only took us approximately 15 minutes to bolt the steering stabilizer on to our new Suzuki QuadRacer (which certainly could benefit from having a steering dampener). We're happy to report that the performance difference is night and day. It's awesome when we get to test a product that is truly a standout such as this one. It helped our machine track much straighter through really rough conditions, like over killer whoops, and also helped slow the steering down to more manageable levels on really tight, technical trails in the woods. Best of all, thanks to the adjustability factor, we can really dial it in to almost any track condition. Regardless of your skill level or riding ability, this product will certainly help smooth out the bumps on the track or trail.

HITS: Very high-quality component; super adjustable; most importantly, it works great.

MISSES: It's hard to find any fault with the PRP stabilizer.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
